1. How to Choose the Right Off-road Winch? ( X Standards to Check Off-road Winch)

  • SUV Winch

For trucks, it's simple. Take the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) and multiply it by 1.5. For example, if you've got a new Jeep Wrangler Rubicon two door. A quick visit to Jeep's website shows the vehicle's GVWR is right about 5,000 lbs. (2,268 kg). Multiply this by 1.5 and you'll get your minimum capacity. In this case, it's 7,500 lbs. (3402 kg). An 8,000 lb (3629 kg) capacity WARN ZEON 8-S is a good place to start, but for some extra grunt, you can move up to a 10,000 lb. (4536 kg) winch. Remember, you can always go up in capacity. Warn offers truck/SUV winches ranging from 8,000 lbs. (3402) to 16,500 lbs. (7484 kg). See which one is right for you.

  • Powersport Winch

On the powersports side of things, it’s a bit different.

ATV: 2,500 lb. to 3,500 lb capacity (1134 kg to 1588 kg)

Two-Seat UTV: 3,500 lb. to 4,500 lb. capacity (1588 kg to 2041 kg)

Four-Seat UTV: 4,500 lb. to 5,500 lb. capacity (2041 kg to 2495 kg)

We offer a host of options in both our standard-duty VRX lineup (2,500 lb. to 4,500 lb. /1134 kg to 2041 kg capacities) as well as our premium AXON products (3,500 lb. to 5,500 lb. / 1588 kg to 2495 kg capacities). Whether you’re looking for a truck or powersports winch, you’ll have your choice between steel rope or synthetic. If you’re not sure which to choose, check out this post we made about steel vs. synthetic rope.

2. How to Operate Off-road Winch?

  • Choose a pad suitable for your winch. First, make sure that the motor, drum and gearbox will be in the same straight line after installation. Secondly, make sure that the ground is powerful enough to withstand the effort of your winch.

  • Secure the pad. The platform should be installed on the fixed part of the chassis. Move the free unwind handle from the “free unwind” position, pull the rope through the jaws, put on the hook.

  • Install and connect the control unit. The control unit should be located near the winch motor, in order to make it easy to use. Ropes must not cross any surfaces that could be damaged, and certainly, no people should be around.

  • Before starting, check that the rope is evenly screwed. Throw a rag or jacket on the rope closer to the hook. If the rope is torn, the clothes or rag will act as a damper and prevent the rope from being dropped.

  • Give a load on the rope, so that it is evenly wound. Continue working under the load until you remove the car.

3. How Does Off-road Winch Work?

A winch is a hauling or lifting device consisting of a rope, cable or chain winding around a horizontal rotating drum. A power source, usually a motor, turns the drum to spool up the line. On most off-road vehicles, the winch mounts to a bumper, usually the front......

4. What Are the Pulling Force of Off-road Winchs?

Few accessories on a 4x4 provide as great a feeling of security as a winch. You can have a rig running the biggest engine, trickest suspension, and nastiest tires, but it's that winch on the front that you count on when those other components fail to keep your 4x4 moving.....

5. How to Care for Off-road Winch?

This is not a surprise that winches are always getting dirty and must be cleaned. After each ride, it is necessary to make some simple procedures:

  • 1. Put the winch off the car. Disassemble it and make a visual assessment of its condition.

  • 2. Remove the remaining water from the winch and dry the electrical part. Special attention should be paid to the state of contacts and the brush unit, especially if it took some time to get to the cleaning aftera ride. It is necessary to clean the contacts and remove the corrosion.

  • 3. Check out the presence and condition of the lubricant in the gearbox. Add a new lubricant, if necessary. If the contamination is strong, you need to disassemble and wash all parts of the gearbox in kerosene, and then thoroughly lubricate.

  • 4. Check out the condition of the contacts in the solenoid unit and on the outer part of the winch.

  • 5. Thoroughly clean, rinse, dry and reinstall the winch rope. The rope must lie tightly and evenly, without overlapping. If your rope is synthetic and you are not going to use it soon, it is better to store it separately.

Regular and timely maintenance of the winch is a guarantee of its long and successful operation.

6. What is the Differences Between Hydraulic and Electric Winch?

Electric winches are the most common and most optimal self-pulling mechanism. The winch of this class is a drum with a rope and gearbox, but it is driven by an electric motor. Managed by a mechanism with remote control.

In fact, all work with such a winch consists of three actions: pressing the “unwinding” button to extend the rope to the needed length, mounting on the entrenched car and “winding”. On the drum of such a winch it usually fits up to 30 meters of a rope, and the thrust force can vary from 2,500 to 12,000 pounds.

Commercial cars often require more professional equipment. Therefore, here are used hydraulic winches that are using the engine power to operate. They are very unpretentious to operating conditions and have high power and reliability, which ensures their popularity among users of special equipment.
